Help end the sale of glue traps in England

We campaigned successfully to ban the public use of rodent glue traps in England, but these cruel devices are still being legally sold in hundreds of local corner shops and hardware stores across the country, for as little as £1.

These cruel devices condemn animals to agonising, drawn-out deaths. Stuck in the glue, terrified mice, rats, other wildlife and even family pets are left helpless, often breaking bones and tearing off skin to escape. A member of the public caught using a glue trap could receive a criminal conviction, so why are they still for sale?

Urge the Defra Secretary to ask England to ban glue trap sales.

Dear Secretary of State,

Rodent glue traps are inhumane, indiscriminate and indefensible, condemning animals to agonising and drawn-out deaths. Stuck in the powerful glue, terrified mice, rats, non-target wildlife and even family pets can tear off their own skin and limbs in desperate attempts to escape.

I was pleased when, in 2024 following campaigning from Humane World for Animals, the Glue Traps (Offences) Act banned the use of glue traps by the general public. But this ban is not widely known about, and Humane World for Animals has shown that glue traps are still being sold both online and in hundreds of shops in England for as little as £1.

This continued sale means that animals are still being subjected to horrible suffering, and earlier this year the government’s Animal Sentience Committee concluded that ‘…the continued sale of glue traps has the effect of placing people at significant risk of breaking the law.’

I am aware the Scottish Government has banned the sale of rodent glue traps, that the Welsh Government has completely banned the use of rodent glue traps, and that Humane World for Animals and the Animal Sentience Committee are all calling for a coordinated sales ban to be applied across the UK.

Animals and the public risk paying the price for a law that isn’t delivering on its promise of protecting animals. Please do not let England fall behind other parts of the UK on animal welfare.

Please end this cruelty once and for all. Please ban the sale of rodent glue traps in England.
