Urge your MP to say no to cruel fur imports!

Trembling in small, barren wire cages, spinning and pacing out of frustration and boredom, and then beaten to death with a wooden bat or electrocuted - these are the brutal scenes from a new investigation on fur farms in China.

Fur farming is cruel wherever it happens in the world, and the UK is currently complicit in that cruelty. We have built huge public and political support for a Fur-Free Britain, but recent press reports say that in negotiations for a trade agreement with the EU – the ‘EU reset’ – the government is willing to sacrifice our freedom to ban imports of cruel products, like fur. We must not let this happen.

I support a Fur-Free Britain, and I am deeply concerned by recent press reports that the government may be about to trade away our right to ban imports of cruel fur products.

The UK led the world when we banned fur farming more than 20 years ago, we need to take that strong stand again now - if fur is too cruel to farm here, it’s too cruel to sell here.

Humane World for Animals has just released footage from a new investigation conducted by its partner revealing yet more suffering on fur farms, this time from China. It shows animals trembling in tiny wire cages, and animals beaten to death. It is heartbreaking. I understand millions of pounds worth of fur is imported to the UK from China every year, and fur farms in European countries like Finland also inflict terrible suffering on animals. How can we call ourselves a ‘nation of animal lovers’ when we are complicit in this brutal trade?

I understand that the government’s goal of the ‘EU reset’ is to promote trade and growth but stronger ties to Europe should not tie the UK into trading in cruelty. Would you please write to Europe Minister, Nick Thomas-Symonds and Defra Minister, Emma Reynolds today to express my concern regarding the press reports and my belief that we shouldn’t sell out on our morals. Please urge them to ensure we retain our right to ban imports of cruel products that would be illegal to produce here, including animal fur.

Since the UK banned fur farming in 2003, 23 countries have followed our lead. We need the government to show that leadership again. Ending the UK’s bloody fur trade will help end the suffering of millions of animals on fur farms worldwide every year. Ending this horrible trade globally is also vital as top virologists have named it as a highly plausible source of the next pandemic.

I strongly support animal welfare measures, and I want to see an urgent ban on fur imports and sales in the UK.
