End the suffering of captive wildlife at roadside zoos in Quebec

Despite repeated incidents of negligence and animal cruelty at roadside zoos across Quebec over the last decade, the government has failed to enact strong regulations to protect wild animals and prevent future incidents. As a result of this failure, Humane World for Animals recently had to intervene to rescue seven desperate lions from euthanasia at a deplorable roadside zoo in Quebec.

It is time for the Quebec government to finally put an end to roadside zoos and stop this suffering for good. Help us ensure that no animal suffers at the hands of roadside zoos in Quebec ever again.

Dear Premier Legault and Minister Charette,

In light of a recent incident involving the rescue of seven lions from a roadside zoo in Quebec, I am writing to convey my strong support for an immediate moratorium on the issuance of permits for unaccredited zoos in Quebec and the enactment of strong regulations to protect captive wild animals.

Just days ago, seven desperate lions were rescued from a deplorable roadside zoo in Quebec. The shocking conditions in which these lions were found are a direct result of the government’s failure to act.

In 2019, animal protection organizations performed the largest zoo animal seizure in Canada’s history, rescuing more than 200 wild and exotic animals from a deplorable facility. The public demanded action, and the Quebec government should have ensured this kind of suffering would never happen again.

Unfortunately, the government failed to act. As a result, yet another roadside zoo was allowed to set up in the same area, subjecting countless wild animals to even more neglect and abuse. When the zoo ultimately declared bankruptcy, Humane World for Animals had to intervene to save seven lions from euthanasia.

While these lions have been saved, so many other deserving animals remain intensively confined in horrible conditions across the province, denied the most basic of their needs.

It is time for the Quebec government to finally put an end to roadside zoos and stop this suffering for good. I am therefore calling on the government to:

1.	Put in place an immediate moratorium on the issuance of permits for unaccredited zoos in Quebec.

2.	Work with animal protection groups and other entities to draft and urgently enact strong regulations to protect captive wild animals.

I again urge you to take immediate action to prevent the suffering of wildlife held in captivity in Quebec.
