Use your voice to help hens!
There are nearly 30 million hens on Canadian egg farms at any given time. Most of these animals are kept in cramped wire cages that restrict their movement and cause immense suffering.
On-farm animal welfare is not regulated in Canada. Instead, an organization called the National Farm Animal Care Council establishes "codes of practice" for how farmed animals can be treated. NFACC is primarily made up of animal farming industry representatives.
Every year, millions of hens across Canada are confined in inhumane cages—wire enclosures so small that they deny birds the ability to fully spread their wings or perform other important natural behaviour—even though cage-free systems are known to be better for animal welfare.
We have fought for cage-free housing for hens for over a decade to spare millions of chickens from needless suffering. Despite overwhelming public support for an end to the use of cruel cages, NFACC insists that farmers can continue to confine chickens in what they call "enriched" cages.
It's time for cages to be banned once and for all. Have your say before May 26, 2025!
