Ask the government to ban cruel mother pig cages!

Every year, around 200,000 mother pigs are confined in farrowing crates on UK farms. For up to five weeks at a time, several times each year, these sows are crammed into farrowing crates so small they are unable to turn around, let alone nurture their newborn piglets. Frequent contact with the bars can cause painful sores on their bodies.

Farrowing crates are cruel, outdated and unnecessary and have no place in a nation of animal lovers like the UK. It doesn’t have to be this way; around 40% of pigs on British farms are already crate-free, but we need governments to support farmers to make that 100%.

Ask your MP to support a ban on these cruel cages as soon as possible!

I am writing as your constituent to urge you to attend an upcoming Parliamentary reception hosted by Humane World for Animals and show your support for a ban on the use of farrowing crates in the UK.

I am extremely upset that around 200,000 mother pigs are kept in these cages on British farms each year. The crates are so small the sows are unable to turn around, or even stand up and lie down comfortably. All of their maternal instincts are frustrated and they cannot interact with their newborn piglets. I’m shocked that it is still legal in Britain for these intelligent animals to be kept in such extreme confinement for up to five weeks at a time, several times each year.

Farrowing crates are cruel, outdated and unnecessary. Around 40% of pigs on British farms are already crate-free, but we need governments to support farmers to make that 100%.

The UK prides itself on being a world leader in animal welfare. This is an opportunity for us to truly lead by example and support more humane farming methods.

Please join the team at Humane World for Animals in the Jubilee Room between 4.30 and 6pm on June 3rd, and hear from vets and farmers on the case for a ban on cruel crates. You can also see a life-size replica farrowing crate and pig. I hope you can attend to represent my concerns and show your support.
