Ask the government to get the ban done!

Even though the vast majority (over 80%) of British people find the notion of trophy hunting abhorrent, dozens of hunting trophies from animals, including lions, elephants, brown bears, leopards, hippos and cheetahs, are shipped to the UK every year.

A trophy import ban would create a major disincentive for British trophy hunters to travel abroad to kill animals. It would also send a strong global message that killing animals for ‘fun’ and bragging rights is utterly unacceptable. The UK Labour Government committed to banning hunting trophy imports, we are now rallying further public and political pressure for that to be delivered as soon as possible so we can stop this selfish, cruel and outdated trade.

Ask the government to get the ban done by introducing a government bill to ban hunting trophies to the UK as soon as possible!

Dear Secretary of State, 

I am writing to urge you to introduce a ban on imports of hunting trophies to the UK. I find trophy hunting disgraceful and I am part of the overwhelming majority of the British public who want you to act quickly to stop these sick souvenirs from being brought into our country. 

Trophy hunting causes inexcusable animal cruelty for the purpose of human entertainment and bragging rights. Many animals hunted for trophies are shot by inexperienced hunters and animal suffering is not just celebrated but incentivised, including industry-encouraged hunting with inhumane weapons such as bows and crossbows. Animals who are shot but escape can take hours or even days to die in agony. 

As well as causing suffering to sentient individual animals, scientific studies show that trophy hunting can also have negative impacts on species’ populations and social dynamics, as well as their ecosystems. 

Many wild animal species are already under increasing pressure from loss of habitat, climate change, poaching and the illegal wildlife trade. Yet every year British trophy hunters travel overseas to brutally kill animals for fun and return with dozens of body parts from the world’s most magnificent and powerful animals, including elephants, lions and giraffes.  

The trophy hunting industry is based on an economic model that incentivises the cruel and unsustainable exploitation of wildlife. It conflicts with and undermines the viability of ethical alternatives, including eco-tourism. Trophy hunting is not, as is sometimes claimed, essential for conservation. There are many highly successful conservation programmes operating around the world which do not involve killing the animals they are meant to protect.  

Due to the threats trophy hunting poses to people, animals and habitats, many countries already prohibit trophy hunting in full or to a significant degree, while others have introduced national restrictions on imports of hunting trophies. Forty-five passenger and freight airline companies have prohibited the transport of some or all hunting trophies on their carriers, including the world’s top five largest airline groups.  

I hope you will do everything you can to ensure a UK ban is prioritised, as promised to voters, and give the government’s full support to allow it to pass swiftly. A ban is supported by Humane World for Animals UK and many other NGOs, working together to end the UK’s part in this cruel and unsustainable industry. 

Delivering the promised ban will help to demonstrate that the UK truly is a nation of animal lovers. Thank you for your consideration of my request.
