Monsoon Session of Parliament 2025: Write to the Ministry of Animal Husbandry to table the Animal Welfare Bill
The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 was independent India’s first legislation to address animal cruelty. It extended protection to domestic and captive animals and prescribed penalties for acts of cruelty. However, despite the passage of over 64 years, the Act has not undergone any meaningful amendment to reflect current realities. Meanwhile, media continues to report disturbing cases of brutality against animals, highlighting the urgent need for reform.
In 2021, a revised draft of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Bill was circulated, receiving support from over 140 Members of Parliament and widespread public endorsement. Yet, the Bill remains pending.
We will continue to work with the authorities to ask for stronger laws against animal cruelty. Pledge your support alongside Humane World for Animals India, formerly called Humane Society International/India and People For Animals, in our call for #NoMore50 — a demand to strengthen the outdated 1960 Act with stricter penalties and effective deterrents.
Your signature today will make us stronger when we ask the Government to bring in the new law. Together, we can ensure animals are treated with the dignity and protection they deserve.
